ABOUT ME

I’m a writer of fiction and nonfiction who lives in rural Northern California. In 2016 I exposed the financial shell game played by one of California’s largest skilled nursing providers that left local patients with substandard care. You can find that award-winning journalism here. A 2022 story which revisited this issue also won several local and state awards. In 2017 my cover story about the Hoopa Rodeo (link here) won first prize for sportswriting from the California Newspaper Publishers Association. Hey, that one surprised me! I’ve been writing about Humboldt County’s complicated relationship with our homeless residents for almost a decade. Some examples here, here, and here. In 2020 I transitioned to writing more fiction, and had a short story, “Rest. Stop.” picked up by the Saturday Evening Post. My short story “The Hidden Places” appeared in the May/June issue of Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine. That story was nominated for the 2022 Shamus Awards.
